Professional & Extra Curricular Responsibilities:
Field Work at Lloyd Barbee Montessori
In the spring semester of 2022 in my Intro to Art Education course, I was given to opportunity to assist in a Montessori Kindergarten Classroom taught by Carrie O'Connell. I was there 9:00am to 1:00 pm every Friday to help, and accumulated almost 30 hours of observation in the semester. My responsibilities were mainly to support the teacher by correcting mild misbehavior, keeping students focused on their individual work, and maintaining a safe learning environment. The classroom was large, but I was able to make connections and get to know all of the students and watch them grow.

Model Magic "Buddies"
This fall of 2023, I am currently in an Elementary methods course, where I am placed at Lloyd Barbee to do my field work once again. I am here twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday (12:30pm-4:00pm). This is a class of ten students, all ranging from 4-5 years old. This has been a much more hands on and challenging semester than my last (larger) classroom. There are several students with ranging impulse control issues (some who often resort to physical violence), a struggle to settle into a routine, high energy, and overall lack of attention. For the first couple of weeks, I tried my best to gauge the dynamics of the classroom, and how each child behaved and responded to each other. I was given so much input that I was able to learn every student's name and general personality within the week.
Tuesday, 10/17/2023, I planned a short activity for them to participate in which required me to take students out into the hallway in small groups to maintain focus and give individual instruction. They were making "buddies" with Model Magic, googly eyes, and decorative elements such as feathers and pipe cleaners for hair, tails, wings, etc. I walked them through how to construct a round body, attach arms, legs, and tails all while keeping the expectations open to personal choice. They sat to dry until Thursday, which is when they were instructed on different coloring techniques using line variety which they were currently learning in their art class with Ms. Susan. They colored their Buddies with washable marker then reinforced any decorations that have fallen off with Elmer's glue.

Field Work at IDEAL
Over the course of my Secondary Methods class at UWM, I taught an eight-week middle school art course at IDEAL. The subject matter and medium were a choice and I immediately gravitated towards ceramics. Given its transformative nature, the big idea we created are lessons around was "change and transformation". Ashley (my co-teacher) and I formulated three lessons within our unit, all experimenting with different ceramics techniques, collaboration, and introspective thinking. Once all of the projects were completed at the end of the unit, student's families came in for a fine arts night to showcase student work and for us teachers to connect with our student's parents.
